Practical use of decommissioned aircraft.
Usually, after a certain period of service, decommissioned airliners are sent to aircraft graveyards or to scrap metal. But there are other ways to recycle used cars. Some use planes as hotels, others – restaurants, and still others, in general, make designer interior items from their parts. This overview presents 6 practical ideas for using old airliners.
1. Luxury hotel
Costa Verde – airplane hotel.
Luxury hotel made inside an old plane.
In the national park of Costa Rica, there is an unusual luxury hotel Costa Verde. From the outside it looks like a crashed liner, «lost» among the impenetrable jungle. Visitors can feel like the heroes of an adventure film in it. Boeing 727 aircraft from the 1960s, set at 15 meters, offers stunning views of the rainforest and the Atlantic Ocean.
2. Affordable hostel
Jumbo Hostel – hostel located right at the Swedish airport.
Room equipped right in the cockpit.
On an abandoned runway at Arlanda Airport near Stockholm, Sweden, there is a decommissioned 747-200 airliner. In 2008, it was converted into a hostel called Jumbo Hostel. Inside the plane there are 24 rooms for budget travelers and 1 suite, located right in the cockpit.
3. Airplane boat
Cosmic Muffin – the only aircraft converted into a motor boat.
The one-of-a-kind Cosmic Muffin plane-boat was converted from an old Boeing B-307. The floating object has a completely rebuilt hull, updated interior and new inline engines. Its space can be used for informal negotiations or business meetings..
4. Airplane restaurant
«Runway 34» – restaurant in Zurich airport.
Interior design of the aircraft restaurant «Runway 34».
Opposite the international airport in Zurich (Switzerland) in the hangar there is a restaurant called «Runway 34» («Runway 34»), where the Soviet Il-14 aircraft became the original decoration for it. Guests can stay free of charge both in the hangar and inside the aircraft itself. The whole restaurant is divided into zones where national dishes from different countries are served. In the plane itself, in the place where the first class was located, a cigar salon is now equipped. Through the glass floor, visitors can see what is happening on the ground side of the restaurant.
5. Wings from the plane instead of the roof
747 Wing House – a house with airplane wings instead of a roof.
Airplane turbine turned pool.
The rooftops of 747 Wing House, designed by architect David Hertz, are made from real airplane wings. On the territory of the house, you can see many more details from the aircraft, which have become an integral part «airplane» design.
6. Airplane parts become interior items
Designer porthole lamp.
Parisian designer Paul Coudamy transformed parts of an airplane with portholes into a stylish lamp that can be installed both above your home desk and in the office.
Incidentally, Motoart has also developed a series of concept furniture made from the remains of decommissioned aircraft..
