In our article, you will learn how to make a DIY storage box. Manufacturing technology is very simple, so let’s get started.
Before starting work, prepare everything you need, namely:
- cardboard box of the required volume,
- a piece of fabric (it is better to opt for dense fabric),
- glue, PVA or any other, for gluing fabric and paper.
You will also need the following tools – a cardboard knife, scissors, a needle and thread in the color of the fabric or a sewing machine, pins.
We make a box with an open top, so first of all, cut off the top lids of the box with a knife, as a result, you should get a box made of cardboard.
Do-it-yourself storage box will always differ favorably from the purchased option, because the color, size, length of the handles and, in general, their presence are determined by you. If you don’t need pens, read the next steps. If necessary, the presence of rivers do the following. We cut out two rectangles from the fabric, the length and width of your choice. We fold carefully, see photo. Next, sew along the edge, by hand or on a typewriter. Then we apply the resulting bundles from the side of the box, in the middle, mark with a pencil the places where it is necessary to make slots for the ends of the handle, and cut out «windows» on the box at these locations. It is important to make the slots as narrow as possible, 2-3 mm, no more.
In order for our DIY storage box to look neat and attractive, it is important not to spoil the next step. We glue the fabric to the bottom. To do this, place the box in the center of the fabric rectangle, outline the borders with a pencil, then take the box, grease the bottom with glue and lean against the sketch outlined on the fabric. Turn the box over and gently smooth out the material, from center to edge.
The next step is to paste over the edges, proceed in the same way, coat the wall of the box, lean against the fabric, smooth it. To keep everything smooth, remember to stretch the fabric before gluing. At the four corners of the box, you will have triangular folds, this is extra fabric, it must be cut off as shown in the photo.
Next, to make a box for storage with your own hands, you need to arrange the joints of the fabric on the edges. Gently peel back the fabric (see photo) and glue the layer that you plan to leave below.
To make further work easier, it is better to allow the glue to dry out, but for now we coat the side surfaces of the box and, bending the top layer, glue it over the bottom.
Our DIY storage box is almost ready, it remains to arrange the top edge. We glue the cardboard on the inside of the box with glue, the width of the adhesive strip should be slightly less than the width of the covering fabric, this will save you from smudges.
The final touch, we fix the handles. There are already slots in the box itself, it remains to make them on the fabric, the places for the cut can be determined by touch. Cut carefully, in one line, the cut in the material should be slightly shorter than in the box. When the slots are ready, we thread the handles, fasten them on the inner wall and additionally strengthen them, the method is shown in the photo.
