Do it yourself

How to make a bottle cork rug?

A rug made of bottle corks can be used in the hallway or in the bath, because it absorbs liquid well and is not afraid of moisture. It is very simple to make it with your own hands; this does not require expensive materials or special skills. Such a rug will suit any interior, but it will look especially good if the interior design is sustained in an eco-style..

Materials

To make a rug out of corks, you first need to accumulate the corks themselves. For a small-sized product, you need about 150 pieces, if you want a larger carpet, you will need more corks.

In addition, you need:

  • cutting board;
  • emery;
  • knife (sharp);
  • fabric base (you can take a rubber mat, rubberized fabric, soft plastic, canvas as a base);
  • glue (super glue, hot glue);
  • rag to remove excess glue.

Training

The plugs must be washed with detergent. If there are red wine corks among them, soak them overnight with bleach to prevent bottle cork rugs “spotted”. After that, be sure to rinse it several times in running water and dry it. Perform further work only after complete drying. Cut each cork in half, sand the sections. Do it on a board so you don’t get hurt.

The basis

Soft plastic, or dense rubberized fabric, and even durable canvas are suitable as a basis for a cork rug. Old mats can be used if they are strong enough. Cut out a future rug from the base, and cut it out. The size depends on your desire, the preferred shapes are rectangle or square.

Layout

After the preparatory work for making a rug from bottle corks is completed, you can proceed to the main operation. Lay out the corks starting from the edges and working towards the center. You can do it in a row, or you can alternate directions to form a pattern. If at the end of the work it is found that the plugs do not enter the remaining space, they must be carefully trimmed.

Mount

The final and most crucial stage in creating a rug from corks is gluing them to the base. The order of work is the same as when laying out – from the edges to the center. Remove excess adhesive immediately with a cloth. Try to ensure that each half of the cork lies in the place previously assigned to it..

Drying

It remains only to let the rug dry and, if desired, treat the bottom and edges with a sealant so that moisture does not seep through it.
