Converted Bunker Hut: Free Shelter for the Night

Bivak na Prehodavcih – hut for mountaineers at night.

High in the mountains in the national Slovenian park Triglav (Slovenia’s Triglav National Park), an original hut for climbers appeared. It was converted from a dilapidated bunker during the First World War. Now those who lingered on the snow-capped peak until dark will be able to spend the night in this refuge.

Architectural project by Premica Architects.

Company architects Premica Architects completed the construction of a hut (Bivak na Prehodavcih). The experts used the ruins of a 100-year-old bunker as a basis. Taking into account the difficult climatic and geographical conditions, all building materials were delivered by helicopter..

The bunker became the concrete foundation for the hut. Outside, the structure is sheathed with PREFA aluminum panels, which perfectly fit the building into the rocky landscape and protect the shelter from snow and wind.

The inside of the shelter is made of cross-laminated wood panels. They are durable and lightweight at the same time. In addition, KLP panels are quickly assembled.

The hut Bivak na Prehodavcih is designed only so that travelers can spend the night in it. Lighting is provided by solar panels on the roof.

In the Julian Alps in Italy, you can also find accommodation. But, to get to the shelter, you need to climb to a height of 2500 meters.
