Back to basics: a home integrated into a cave

Cuevas del Pino – a house built in a cave.

Life in caves is becoming more and more fashionable. Spanish architects also decided to support this trend and presented a residential building built in a natural cavity of limestone rocks. The minimalist interior compensates for the unusualness of the walls, which were left almost in their original form..

Architectural studio UMMO Estudio completed work on the construction of a residential building (Cuevas del Pino), partially integrated directly into a limestone cave located in the foothills of the Sierra Morena near Cordoba (Spain). Previously, the hollow geological formation was used as a refuge by itinerant shepherds, but now the cave has been transformed into a modern home.

The spacious 104 square meters allowed the architects to create a comfortable and practical living space. The designer admits that they were tempted to use contrasting ultra-modern materials for decorating the house, but then the general would disappear «mood» at home, feeling close to nature.

Concrete and marble were used to cover the floor, while natural wood adds «heat» the interior. And yet the main element of the decor is limestone walls, left almost in their original form..

In the Spanish Setenil de las Bodegas under stone vaults in caves there is not just one house, but a whole city. Huge cliffs hang over the narrow streets, threatening to destroy buildings. Newly arrived tourists have an irresistible desire – to jump out into an open place away from low rocks.
