Pleated House – a house in the forest.
Among the dense greenery on a small island on Lake Michigan, an original residential building is hidden from prying eyes. Its facade is made of natural wood, and the roof, covered with green turf, allows the house to literally «dissolve» in the surrounding landscape.
Architectural project by Johnsen Schmalig Architects.
Johnsen Schmalig Architects have completed work on the Pleated House. The client (graphic designer) expressed a desire for something simple but elegant. The designers tried to create a comfortable living space with a minimum of decor.
Textured facade clad in cedar planks.
A dark textured facade made of cedar boards of different widths, as if «softens» sharp corners of the building. In addition, natural wood allows the house to practically «dissolve» in the surrounding forest landscape.
Pleated House. Interior.
The area of the house is 172 square meters. In contrast to the dark facade of the house, its interior is made in light colors. White lacquered furniture only enhances the contrast. Wide double-glazed windows allow natural light to flow freely into the house.

In the dense thicket near Warsaw, you can also find an unusual building. The first floor of the house is lined with mirrored panels that make it virtually invisible to casual passers-by.
