Observatory House – House inspired by the famous Indian Observatory.
In the small Mexican village of Roca Blanca on the Pacific coast, there is an unusual residential building that from afar resembles a flat surface with a huge lens, which reflects the endless blue of heaven. To create such outlines, the author was inspired by the famous Indian observatory with simple, and, at the same time, ingenious forms.
Project of the creative tandem Gabriel Orozco and Tatiana Bilbao.
The creative tandem of Mexican artist Gabriel Orozco and architect Tatiana Bilbao was beautifully embodied in the construction of a house on the Pacific coast called the Observatory House. The creation of such forms of the artist’s dwelling was inspired by the 18th century Jantar Tantar observatory, built in the Indian city of Jaipur. After Gabriel saw her, he wanted to have something like that, and for this purpose he invited Tatiana Bilbao.
Of course, the house did not become a literal interpretation of the Indian observatory, but the architect succeeded «catch» main idea, to repeat a certain «genetic» code.
Observatory House. Simple outlines of the house.
Local materials were used to build the house – concrete blocks, plaster, natural wood. They even say that they were delivered using the donkey Panchito, which was given beer instead of water to give strength.
Observatory House. Minimalist interior.
The interior is made in very restrained colors, which are compensated by the picturesque surrounding nature. Simple forms, the lack of a clear style of the building allow it to harmoniously fit into the landscape. «Zest» Observatory House became a circular pool, built on the roof of the building.
Observatory House. Lens-like pool.
And on the Spanish coast of the Atlantic Ocean, you can see an equally spectacular structure. The straight forms of the huge mansion resembling a dock visually lead directly to the ocean. This is the perfect place to «hide away» from the hustle and bustle of the city and dream about the frailty of life.
